Before working with Steve, I had the slightest idea of what coaching means and how it would benefit me. I was even oblivious as to how coaching is different from counseling. Steve has not only shown me how I could be a better person but also, through coaching, how I could be the best version of who I really am professionally and otherwise. Working with coach Steve has been a rewarding experience. As a newer attending in a high-volume practice our work on a establishing a personal mission statement, long term goal setting, and energy management have been very useful. I was introduced to Stephen Seay through the Joy of Medicine program offered through the Sacramento Valley Medical Society. I had all the symptoms of burnout, I was unhappy in my private and professional life and it showed in my interactions with people at work. Anytime I would have a difficult day, it would seem magnified and somehow insurmountable. I felt angry, drained, unsupported and alone in my struggle. I went on the Joy of Medicine website and found Stephen’s profile, and loved the fact that he would come to see me. Travelling elsewhere to get help seemed to magnify the burden. The first time we met, we talked for over an hour and a half. In that short time, he listened to me and my litany of things I had to complain about. He then helped me see the positives in my professional life that had gotten buried, and turned a little switch in my head that allowed me, after that first session, to see the events that I perceived as battles and endless struggles, instead as challenges to be met and overcome. Since then, we have met fairly regularly, and I really feel that his coaching has made a huge difference in my resilience. People around me, especially staff in my office, have really appreciated the change. I can still sometimes feel overwhelmed, but my attitude about it has changed: I know I can deal with it, and I can roll with the punches so much more easily now.

Steve is godsend to me! Joy in medicine has always been one of my purposes in life.
